Diffractions 2019 - 2021

Diffractions is a recent body of work produced in Hanoi. This work emerged while wandering around the city. (à la derive) I started photographing walls that called my attention because I could see so many layers of paint. Then, I began to photograph objects. I imagined these walls and objects as metaphors of a history that has not been mine. Therefore, the images presented in this series are analogical expressions and allude to an effort to understand a reality from another perspective.

I print these images, which are then subjected to multiple cuts in order to be reconstructed using collage techniques. I re-photograph the results to produce the final image. By cutting the image apart, the intention is to then put it together creating forms where the space between the parts evidences the difficulty of creating a new narrative. This draws attention to the materiality of the photographic image. I’m using this materiality in order to try to make sense of what I observe. It is a process that deliberately alters, interrupts and re-creates a photograph in order to generate a new way of seeing.
